5 Things You’ll Experience On A Brahmaputra River Cruise

29th April 2019

A Brahmaputra River cruise can really open your eyes to the beauty of Northern India. Taking you through parts of the country that are not usually visited by tourists (at least not in the way that places like Delhi and Mumbai are), a gentle sailing into the heart of the Assam region will leave you with some unforgettable memories.

Here are just a few things you can expect to enjoy.

Vibrant Cuisine

Whether on board your fantastic ship, M.V Mahabaahu, or in the home of a local family, you will get plenty of opportunities to taste some of the region’s flavourful cuisine. The ‘Indian’ food of the UK will be a distant memory as you enjoy authentic dishes from this part of the country, made with ingredients picked up in some of the ports you visit. There will even be some themed evenings when everyone dresses in traditional clothing and a real party atmosphere sweeps across the restaurant.

Don’t worry, if you’re not a fan of Indian food or you want a break from the spice, international options are also offered at all mealtimes.

Friendly Locals

Smiling Welcome India

Whenever you step off the ship and into your latest port of call, be ready to be greeted enthusiastically by the local people. Some will run to meet you at the river banks with a smile, others will stage a traditional performance that includes singing and dancing – but everyone will be pleased to invite you into their community. The people you meet will leave their mark on you once you’ve left, too, as you treasure their warm hearts and inspiring stories.

Beautiful Wildlife

Tiger Kaziranga

You may already be impressed by the birdlife that exists along the banks of the Brahmaputra (something you can take a closer look at during a river safari), but the wild encounters get even more exciting when you reach the Kaziranga National Park. Rhinos, elephants and water buffalo are all common sights but the animal you’ll be most eager to spot will prove to be a lot more elusive. Bengal tigers roam this reserve and a sighting is something you’ll cherish forever. More wildlife experiences await in Peacock Island, where you’ll meet the mischievous golden langurs.

Spiritual Sights

Lucky Priest Hand Tying

You can’t go to India without visiting a few of the country’s spiritual sights. Temples are part of everyday life here and you will get the chance to see a few during your Brahmaputra River cruise. One particular spot is the SivaDol complex in Sibsagar. Comprising three different temples, it includes the largest temple tower dedicated to Lord Shiva in India, along with structures devoted to both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Durga. You’ll be invited to light a candle and have your hands tied in a ceremony performed by a lucky priest, as you pay your respects.

Ancient Industries

Brahmaputra Sewing

As you move between the towns and villages that thrive alongside the river, you will see the different industries used to help bring money into the community. Showing fantastic commitment and skill, some will make fishing boats, others will sew fabrics, and some source jute and turn it into items such as bags and carpets. Seeing some of these processes from start to finish will give you great insight into everyday life here and present the opportunity to bring home some souvenirs (although a jute bag may be a more practical option than a fishing boat).
