Scenes From The Seine

30th September 2014

The Seine is one of France’s most famous rivers, flowing from just outside Dijon, through the beautiful city of Paris, and then emptying into the English Channel. Whilst some of the river is accessible to ocean liners, you will be able to see so much more when travelling on a Seine river cruise.

Some of these cruises include parts of the Rhone in their itinerary to give you more of a taste of this romantic region. But from beautiful countryside to major cities, there is so much to be seen on the Seine.

Caudebec-en-caux

Honfluer

One charming port on your Seine river cruise could be the vintage fishing village of Caudebec-en-caux. Whilst visiting this sleepy village you can learn all about its history at the Templar’s House. This domestic building dates all the way back to the twelfth century and is only standing today thanks to a local society who formed to prevent it from being torn down. Other buildings of interest include the striking church, featuring a decorative spire and detailed stained glass windows.

There may also be the chance to visit some areas surrounding the village as part of various excursions. You could get the opportunity to visit nearby Honfleur, a beautiful town which inspired works by artists such as Monet, or visit some of Normandy’s renowned abbeys as you trace the ‘Routes des Abbeyes’.

Giverny

Monets House

This port is sure to be a highlight for every art lover on board. Situated in this glorious commune in the French countryside is the house of the ‘Father of Impressionism’, Claude Monet. This building and the surrounding gardens have been immortalised in some of his most famous works and anyone who knows of these paintings will instantly recognise the little bridge and pond.

Whilst your ship docks in nearby Vernon you can visit the town and its Notre Dame church. Smaller than its more famous namesake and Gothic in style, the building was built over six different centuries. You may also like to take some time to stroll through the streets of Vernon admiring the timber framed houses and the quirky Old Mill which is the most iconic, postcard-adorning building within the town.

Rouen

Rouen Clock

Following Paris, Rouen is the biggest city on the river Seine and its medieval charisma will captivate you almost instantly. Among the things that this city is famous for is the fact that it was here that Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. There is a church and tower dedicated to her in the city centre as well as yet another religious building which bears the name of Notre Dame.

During your free time in Rouen be sure to explore some of the many peaceful gardens and walk amongst the charming streets. Pottery lovers will enjoy the ceramics museum, whilst the enchanting Gros-Horloge clock is an eye-catching attraction for all visitors.

Paris

Notre Dame

A river cruise on the Seine just wouldn’t be the same without a visit to perhaps the most romantic city in the world, and this is where your trip is likely to start and finish. Not only will you get the chance to explore infamous monuments like the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triumph and the ‘real’ Notre Dame Cathedral; you will also get to experience the unmistakable atmosphere found in such a well-loved part of the world.

For some more ‘off-beat’ things to do in the French capital, why not head onto the cobbled streets of Montmartre or buy some bread and cheese from a local shop and stage a picnic in front of the Eiffel Tower.

A Seine river cruise is a great way to see two different sides of France; the quaint countryside and the passionate cities that we all know and love. To experience an itinerary similar to this one you can take a trip on the ‘French Delights’ cruise with AmaWaterways, just give the GoRiverCruise team a call for more details.
