5 Unique River Cruises Sailing In 2018

13th February 2018

Most river cruise itineraries run at multiple times throughout the year, giving you a range of opportunities to enjoy a particular route. However, there are also some one-off sailings that take place, offering a unique chance to experience something special that possibly won’t be repeated again. These could be inaugural sailings on a particular river, cruises with special guests on board or themed departures that allow you to indulge a certain hobby. Here are a few exciting examples that are taking place in 2018.

The Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane is a marvellous feat of engineering located on the Marne-Rhine Canal that enables river barges to cross the Vosges Mountains. Constructed in 1969, it is essentially a lift that transports ships up or down a gradient so that they can continue along their journey. During CroisiEurope’s ‘The Marne-Rhine Canal - From Lagarde to Strasbourg’ sailing, you will get the opportunity to witness the inclined plane in action and also visit the family-run crystal workshop found at the lower end. Sailing on board Madeleine, you’ll also stop in Lutzelbourg, Saverne and Waltenheim.

Water Under The Bridge

Ludendorff Bridge

Having announced plans to launch a river cruise product, Fred. Olsen will begin sailings on board their new ship ‘Brabant’ in April 2018. This particular sailing, titled ‘Exploring the Scenic Moselle Valley’, is a great choice for history fans because of its visit to Remagen. Sure to be one of the main highlights, you will get the chance to see what remains of a bridge that played a pivotal role in bringing an end to World War Two.

The Ludendorff Bridge was captured following the Battle of Remagen, allowing Allied Forces to cross the Rhine and launch an assault on Germany’s western front. Today, only the black towers remain, one of which is home to the interesting Peace Museum, showing what the area looked like before, during and after the war.

Viking In Kiev

Kiev Dnieper River

Much like Russian River cruises, there has been a resurgence in river cruises through Ukraine in recent years, as confidence in the stability of the country grows again. One such cruise line sailing this route is Viking River Cruises, who will debut a brand new itinerary along the Dnieper River in May 2018. ‘Kiev to the Black Sea’ will take guests from the Ukrainian capital to the city of Odessa on what is sure to be an insightful voyage. Along the way, there will be plenty of chances to experience the local culture courtesy of Cossack performers, folk art and dining with local families.

Vietnamese Cuisine With Luke Nguyen

Vietnam Street Food

He will be joining an APT river cruise on 9th August 2018 entitled ‘Luke Nguyen's Vietnam And Mekong River Cruise’ to help guests learn more amount the vibrant and delicious cuisine found in this part of the world. During your time in Ho Chi Minh, Luke will guide you through the bustling streets to his very own cookery school where you will learn how to make some classic dishes. Later on in your journey, he will host a session on board to talk about his life and culinary influences.

Rummaging For Rhone Bargains
